What kinds of damage can be repaired?
Broken xref tables, minor stream corruption, duplicate object numbers, and files that were truncated during upload/download. Deeply corrupted files with missing object bodies may partially recover.
Will my form fields, annotations, and signatures survive?
Usually yes for pdf-lib's re-save path. qpdf normalization may regenerate some annotation appearances. Digital signatures can be invalidated as a side effect of any repair.
What if nothing works?
If all engines fail, we return the first error we saw. Your original file is never modified — try a different PDF reader to recover manually, or contact the original author.
