Unlock PDF — Frequently Asked Questions
Can this tool crack a PDF password I do not know?
No. Unlock PDF only strips encryption when the correct password is supplied. It does not guess, brute-force, or bypass unknown passwords. If you forgot your own password, you will need to recover it through whichever system originally issued the PDF.
Is unlocking a PDF legal?
Removing a password from a PDF you own or have explicit permission to modify is legal in most jurisdictions. Stripping protection from a document you do not have the right to access may violate local computer misuse or copyright law. Use this tool only on files you are authorized to decrypt.
Will the content change after unlocking?
No. qpdf-wasm only removes the encryption layer. Text, images, form fields, bookmarks, annotations, and metadata are written out exactly as they were inside the encrypted file.
Does FormatFuse see my PDF or the password?
No. Unlocking runs inside your browser in a Web Worker. The PDF is read from your local file system, processed in-memory, and written back for download. The password is used only to call qpdf and is never transmitted or stored.
Why do some PDFs fail to unlock even with the right password?
A few PDFs use non-standard or outdated encryption handlers that qpdf does not support. Some also contain permission flags rather than a document-open password — those do not need unlocking to view and can be stripped by re-saving through a standard PDF viewer.
