About 1040-ES

Form 1040-ES is how individuals pay tax on income that has nothing withheld from it: self-employment earnings, freelance and contractor pay, interest, dividends, rent, and similar. Instead of one payment in April, the IRS expects this tax in four installments across the year. The official 1040-ES is a booklet that bundles the instructions, the Estimated Tax Worksheet you use to figure the amount, and four payment vouchers, one for each quarter.

The four payments are generally due in mid-April, mid-June, mid-September, and mid-January of the following year, with dates shifting when they land on a weekend or holiday. To avoid an underpayment penalty, most people aim for a safe harbor: paying at least 90% of the current year's tax, or 100% of last year's tax (110% if your prior-year income was high). Confirm the current-year due dates and thresholds in the official instructions, because the figures are updated annually.

FormatFuse opens the official 1040-ES booklet so you can fill a payment voucher in your browser. Use the page thumbnails to jump to the voucher pages near the end, then enter your name, address, SSN, and the amount you are paying. Your details never leave your device. One honest note: this tool fills the voucher, it does not calculate how much you owe. Use the Estimated Tax Worksheet in the booklet for that, and consider paying electronically through IRS Direct Pay or EFTPS, which is faster than mailing a voucher.

How to fill 1040-ES

  1. 1

    Figure your amount first

    Open the right voucher

Use the page thumbnails to jump to the payment voucher for the quarter you are paying. The booklet contains all four vouchers near the end.

  3. 3

    Enter your details

Type your name, address, and SSN (and your spouse's, if filing jointly) onto the voucher.

  4. 4

    Enter the payment amount

Fill in the amount you are paying for this quarter, taken from your worksheet.

  5. 5

    Download and pay

Download the completed voucher to mail with a check, or skip the mail entirely and pay online through IRS Direct Pay or EFTPS using the same amount.

Privacy reminder. Your inputs — including your SSN, EIN, or PAN — never leave your browser. We do not log or transmit form values.

This tool fills the form, it does not give advice. It puts the information you enter onto the official PDF. It does not calculate your taxes, check your answers, or tell you if something is wrong. Compare everything to the official instructions, and if your situation is anything beyond simple, have a professional review it before you file or submit.

FormatFuse is a privacy-first form filler, not a tax preparer, and we are not affiliated with the IRS. This tool does not calculate your estimated tax. Use the Estimated Tax Worksheet in the official 1040-ES instructions to work out the amount, confirm the current-year due dates, and consider paying electronically through IRS Direct Pay or EFTPS instead of mailing a voucher.

Frequently asked questions

Who has to pay estimated taxes with 1040-ES?

Generally, anyone who expects to owe $1,000 or more in tax on income that is not subject to withholding. That commonly means self-employed people, freelancers and contractors, landlords, and investors. If all your income is from a W-2 job with enough withheld, you usually do not need 1040-ES.

When are the quarterly payments due?

The four installments are generally due around April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year, with the date moving to the next business day when it falls on a weekend or holiday. Always confirm the exact current-year dates in the official IRS 1040-ES instructions.

How do I figure out how much to pay?

Use the Estimated Tax Worksheet inside the 1040-ES booklet. It walks you from your expected income through deductions and credits to a total tax, then divides it into quarterly payments. This filler does not calculate the amount for you. Many people use a safe harbor: paying 100% of last year's tax (110% if prior-year income was high) to avoid a penalty.

Do I have to mail the voucher?

No. The voucher is for paying by check through the mail. You can skip it entirely and pay online through IRS Direct Pay (from a bank account, no account needed) or EFTPS. If you pay electronically, you do not need to send the paper voucher at all.

Is it safe to fill out my 1040-ES here?

Yes. The PDF and everything you type, including your SSN and payment amount, stay in your browser. There is no upload and no server that could log it. You can confirm in your browser's Network tab, then download the voucher yourself.
