Fill IRS Form W-4 Online

The official IRS W-4 — set your tax withholding in your browser and hand the finished PDF to your employer. Nothing is uploaded.

About W-4

Form W-4, the IRS's "Employee's Withholding Certificate," is the form every US employee fills out when starting a new job — and any time their situation changes. It tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from each paycheck. Get it right and you avoid both a surprise tax bill in April and lending the government an interest-free loan all year through over-withholding. The current W-4 (redesigned in 2020 and refined since) no longer uses "allowances" — instead you enter dependents and dollar amounts directly, which is more accurate once you understand the five steps.

Most people only need Steps 1 and 5: enter your name, address, Social Security number, and filing status (Step 1), then sign and date (Step 5). That alone gives standard withholding for a single job. Steps 2–4 handle the situations that trip people up: Step 2 if you work multiple jobs or your spouse also works (otherwise you'll under-withhold), Step 3 to claim the Child Tax Credit and other dependents (which reduces withholding), and Step 4 for other income, deductions, or a flat extra amount you want withheld each pay period.

FormatFuse opens the official 2026 IRS W-4 and lets you fill every field in your browser — your SSN and income details never leave your device. When you're done, download it and give it to your employer's payroll or HR (or upload it to their onboarding portal). The W-4 stays with your employer; it is not sent to the IRS. If your withholding looks off mid-year, you can fill a fresh W-4 any time — there's no limit on how often you update it.

How to fill W-4

  1. 1

    Step 1 — Personal info

Enter your name, address, SSN, and check your filing status (single, married filing jointly, or head of household).

  2. 2

    Step 2 — Multiple jobs

Only if you hold more than one job or your spouse also works. Check box 2(c) for the simplest accurate option when both jobs pay similarly.

  3. 3

    Step 3 — Dependents

Multiply qualifying children under 17 by $2,000 and other dependents by $500, then enter the total to lower your withholding.

  4. 4

    Step 4 — Adjustments (optional)

Add other income, deductions beyond the standard deduction, or a flat extra amount to withhold each pay period.

  5. 5

Step 5 — Sign + hand to employer

Sign, date, and download. Give the PDF to your employer's payroll/HR — it does not go to the IRS.

Privacy reminder. Your inputs — including your SSN, EIN, or PAN — never leave your browser. We do not log or transmit form values.

This tool fills the form, it does not give advice. It puts the information you enter onto the official PDF. It does not calculate your taxes, check your answers, or tell you if something is wrong. Compare everything to the official instructions, and if your situation is anything beyond simple, have a professional review it before you file or submit.

FormatFuse provides a privacy-first form-filling tool. We are not affiliated with the Internal Revenue Service and do not provide tax advice. Give your completed W-4 to your employer per their instructions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fill out a W-4 to get the most accurate withholding?

For a single job with no other income, complete Step 1 and Step 5 only — that applies standard withholding. If you have multiple jobs or a working spouse, do Step 2 (check 2(c) if the jobs pay similarly) or you'll under-withhold and owe in April. Claim dependents in Step 3 to withhold less. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at irs.gov is the most precise way to dial it in.

What should I claim on my W-4 if I'm single with one job?

Just complete Step 1 (name, address, SSN, filing status = Single) and sign Step 5. You don't claim "allowances" anymore — the redesigned W-4 removed them. Leaving Steps 2–4 blank gives you standard single withholding, which is correct for most single filers with one job and no dependents.

How do I have more (or less) tax withheld?

To withhold MORE, enter a dollar amount on Step 4(c) — it's added to every paycheck. To withhold LESS, claim dependents in Step 3 or deductions in Step 4(b). People who owed money last April usually add to 4(c); people who got a large refund usually reduce withholding so they keep more per paycheck.

Do I send my W-4 to the IRS?

No. The W-4 goes to your employer's payroll or HR department only. They use it to calculate withholding and keep it on file. The IRS never receives your W-4 directly — they see the result through the taxes your employer remits and your year-end W-2.

How often can I update my W-4?

As often as you like. You should refile after major life changes — marriage, divorce, a new baby, a second job, or a big change in income. Many people also revisit it mid-year if a refund or bill last April was larger than expected. Just fill a fresh W-4 and submit it to your employer.

Is it safe to fill out my W-4 here?

Yes. The PDF and everything you type — including your SSN — stay in your browser. There's no upload and no server that could log it. You can confirm in your browser's Network tab. Then download and share it only through your employer's secure onboarding channel.
